Medicare Prescription Drug Plans

People with Medicare can enroll in a Medicare prescription drug plan and receive extra help paying for the premiums, deductibles, gaps in coverage and co-pays.

SenioRx

The Louisiana SenioRx Program is a program that connects qualified, low-income people with discount prescription drugs, direct from the pharmaceutical manufacturer. Trained counselors are also available to provide Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Coverage plan comparison and enrollment assistance.

SenioRx does not provide assistance for obtaining short-term medications to meet acute needs, including antibiotics.

Patients will be assisted with the public or private programs most likely to meet their needs. LouisianaSenioRx helps low-income, uninsured patients:

  • Enroll in more than 150 company patient assistance programs
  • Access more than 1,200 medicines for free or at a low cost
  • Learn how to contact government programs for which they may qualify

Low Cost Drugs

Several national pharmacies have announced they are drastically reducing the cost of generic prescription drugs. Target, Wal-Mart and Sam's Club, CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid and several of your grocery store pharmacies offer low cost charge for generic drugs.

You will need to contact the drug store for participation and list of medications included in the program.

Many pharmaceutical companies have programs which provide free or low cost medications to those in need regardless of age.

Most of these programs require that you:

  • Do not have insurance that covers outpatient prescription drugs
  • Do not qualify for government assistance
  • Have income within their stated guidelines

The application process is different for each company. Usually a doctor must sign your completed application form and have his/her office submit it for you.

VA Prescription Benefit

If you are an honorably discharged veteran, consider using your VA drug benefit. Veterans can use the VA drug benefit by mail order for their monthly maintenance drugs and still use Medicare Part D for other prescriptions. To apply, call 1-877-222-8387.

Medicare Savings Program

The Medicare Savings Program offers low-income Medicare beneficiaries help covering their Medicare costs with the Medicaid program. You may be eligible for the program depending on your income and assets.
