Distracted driving kills over 3,000 people a year, and the worst part is that it's preventable. According to the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving is any event that diverts your focus from the road to perform another task. While using a cellphone is most commonly associated with distracted driving, other activities like eating and operating a navigation system are also examples of distractions to avoid while driving.
It's important to be aware of these habits, so you can prevent them. Ask yourself these questions if you're worried about driving distracted:
- Do you text and drive?
- Do you change songs on your phone while driving?
- Do you start your navigation after the car is in motion?
- Do you immediately eat your food from the drive thru?
- Do you grab things from the backseat when the car isn't in park?
- Do you look at yourself in the mirror while driving?
- Do you get on social media or check your email while driving?
If you answer yes to any of these questions, then you drive distracted.
