Quick Tips: Open Enrollment Reminders

A few important deadlines are approaching if you need health care coverage. Medicare Open Enrollment ends December 7. Our Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) staff can answer your questions and provide guidance.

Open enrollment for individual health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace ends January 15, 2024, but if you enroll in a plan or make changes to your current plan by December 15, coverage will begin January 1, 2024. Contact an agent to help review your options.

Understanding Deductibles

As you prepare to lock in your health care coverage, it’s important to understand deductibles. A deductible is the amount you pay before your insurance company starts paying its share of the cost of health care services you receive. Remember to review your policy or plan document for additional information. The following tips can help you make the best decision this open enrollment period.

  • Visit your health plan’s website to learn more about what’s covered and what doctors and facilities are in a plan’s network.
  • Request a Summary of Benefits and Coverage from the insurance company. It’s a list of benefits, deductibles, copays and coinsurance amounts.
  • Some plans may pay the costs of preventative services before you meet your deductible.

Preventing Auto Theft

The holiday season is here and there are a few steps you can take to avoid becoming a victim of auto theft . Here are tips to keep in mind as you celebrate the season:

  • Lock your car doors.
  • Keep holiday packages and possessions out of plain sight.
  • Always park in a well-lit area.
  • Remove your keys from the ignition.
  • If you have a garage, use it, and lock it up.
  • Install motion detector lights in the proximity of your driveway, carport or garage.

The Louisiana Automobile Theft and Insurance Fraud Prevention Authority urges you to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity in your neighborhood.
