Your Insurance Checklist

The winter season brings holiday fun and cold weather. But before you bundle up and head out, review your insurance policies.  Doctors' offices are often crowded during the winter months, meaning you may have a time-consuming wait when seeking treatment for a sore throat or an earache. Your health insurance may offer alternatives. Ask whether your plan includes options such as phone or web consultations with health care professionals who can answer questions or provide remote diagnosis. Additionally, mini-med or urgent care centers may accept your health insurance and are likely more cost-effective than a trip to the ER. However, for any prolonged or acute illness, it is best to visit your doctor.

Traveling in the winter months can be full of surprises. Even if you’re traveling somewhere warm, bad weather can cause delays. To help mitigate the cost of rebooking a flight or an unexpected overnight stay, travel sites and airlines offer travel insurance that may cover unexpected delays or cancelations. Travel insurance can cover everything from lost luggage to delays and cancellations. Make sure to closely read any policy you consider.

Working from home is a benefit many employers have embraced as they compete to attract and retain quality employees and provide a satisfying work-life balance. But telecommuting is not always as simple as having a cell phone, a laptop and high-speed Internet. Concerns about cyberattacks add an additional layer of liability for the work-from-home professional. Verify that your company will install the necessary software on your home computer to protect the company's data, and be mindful of your own responsibility with regard to protecting company information. Telecommuters face similar risk factors as employees in the office with regard to work-related injuries and safety issues. You may want to verify that your employer's workers' compensation coverage will cross over to your home office.

Contact your insurance agent or company, ask questions, and check your coverage to see if there are gaps.

What is a Medicare Advantage Plan?

Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) are offered by private companies whom Medicare pays to cover hospital (Part A) and medical (Part B) benefits. Some MA Plans include prescription drug coverage (Part D) and some provide vision and dental services.

What is a Medicare Supplement or Medigap plan?
Medicare Supplement plans are health insurance policies sold by private insurers designed to cover the gaps that exist in original Medicare. Medicare was designed to cover most medical expenses; however, many times there are out-of-pocket expenses such as co-pays, coinsurances, and deductibles that are not covered. Medicare Supplement Plans, also known as “Medigap” plans are designed to take care of these gaps.

I am under age 65, and I am on Medicare. I need a supplemental insurance policy that will cover what Medicare does not cover. Can I purchase such a policy in Louisiana? How much will it cost?

Anyone who acquires Medicare, regardless of age, has an open enrollment into Medigap/Medicare Supplement insurance the first six (6) months that Medicare Part B is in effect. After six (6) months, an insurance company may ask health questions to determine if it wishes to offer you a policy. The cost may vary from company to company for the same coverage. Factors that influence the premium include smoker status, marital status, health status, coverage features and where you live.
