Take the Time to Shop Around
Is it almost time for renewal of your auto or homeowners insurance policy? Now is a good time to shop your insurance rates. You can use the Louisiana Department of Insurance’s online system to compare rates among companies. Keep in mind, the guides are not intended to provide an exact estimate of your cost of insurance. Here are a few tips to help you get the right policy to fit your needs.
- Ask questions about how your policy works.
- When you start calling for price quotes, be ready to answer questions about your driving history or the type of home you have.
- Compare policies and choose the one best suited to your situation.

Healthy Habits
While you’re shopping your rates, take a look at your life insurance policy. During this life insurance awareness month, it’s important to understand how your lifestyle can affect your insurance rates. When you apply for individual life or health insurance, you provide answers to detailed questions regarding your health. Based on your answers, insurance companies may ask for additional medical information or tests prior to considering your application for coverage. Some of the habits that can increase premium include:
Smoking. Smokers pay higher premiums than non-smokers. Even if you only smoke a few cigarettes a day, an insurance company could charge you the same premium as a heavy smoker.
High- risk activities. Insurance companies typically charge higher premiums if you participate in high-risk activities like horseback riding or motorcycle riding.
Some insurance companies provide information regarding lifestyle and good health habits. Speak with your agent or company to see if you have access to these tools.
