From the Desk of Commissioner Tim Temple
When the groundhog predicted six more weeks of winter in February, his forecast didn’t apply to Louisiana. Weather changes quickly in our state. We’ve experienced hurricanes, floods, wildfires, tornadoes and, most recently, snowstorms. Because weather in our state is so unpredictable, I’m encouraging everyone to Be Insurance Ready at all times. Being Insurance Ready isn't just about knowing what your insurance policies cover, it’s also about understanding how to properly file a claim, what your out-of-pocket costs may be, and more. My office also recently launched a mobile app called LDIConnect that helps you Be Insurance Ready by providing quick access to resources like the Wind Mitigation Survey and our Storm Claim Center. The app is available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Stay safe and Be Insurance Ready!

Medicare Reminders
Medicare beneficiaries are reminded that the Medicare Advantage open enrollment period ends March 31. During this time, beneficiaries can change to a different Medicare Advantage Plan or switch to Original Medicare. Our senior health counselors offer the following guidance:
- Review the information you receive from your plan. Pay special attention to the annual notice of change and evidence of coverage.
- Take charge of your health and know the benefits your plan offers.
- Refer to your Medicare and You handbook for additional information and important deadlines.

SHIIP Becomes LaSHIP
The Louisiana Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP), is changing its name to Louisiana Senior Health Information Program (LaSHIP). The change is to bring the Louisiana senior health program name inline with branding for the national Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Springing Forward
Spring is around the corner, and that means daylight saving time begins Sunday, March 9. As you are setting your clocks, remember to change the batteries in your smoke detector and create or update your home inventory list. It is important to make insurance a part of your spring cleaning “to-do” list. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) offers a home inventory app that helps you to create a record of your belongings. Click here to download.
Preparing for Severe Weather
With warmer weather comes the increased potential for severe storms. The Louisiana Department of Insurance is here to help you understand your insurance policies and rights as a policyholder. Severe weather can pop up at any time and there are steps you can take now to ensure your home and property are ready this spring.
Ask questions and make changes now. Contact your insurance agent to confirm you have the right coverage in place, keeping in mind new construction or remodeling can add value to your home.
Update your home inventory. Use your phone to take pictures or video of your possessions. Remember to include brand names. It is best to keep and electronic and hard copy of your list.
Make a plan of action. Designate a location in your home in case of flash flooding or other immediate disasters and a location outside your neighborhood in case you cannot return home.
Download the LDI mobile app. LDIConnect provides easy access to resources like the Wind Mitigation Survey and the Storm Claim Center. The app is available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
Do You Need Flood Insurance?
Because Louisiana is surrounded by water on multiple sides, flooding can happen anywhere at any time. Though homeowners insurance policies do not provide coverage for flood damage, residents can purchase a separate flood insurance policy through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), private insurers or surplus lines insurers. Remember, there is a 30-day waiting period for NFIP policies to take effect. LDI can answer basic questions about flood insurance, but the department does not regulate the NFIP, approve its rates or changes. Click here for more information.
